Last year in Arizona the Tucson Unified School District passed a bill that states “a school district or charter school in this state shall not include in its program of instruction any courses or classes that include any of the following: promote the overthrow of the United States government, promote resentment toward a race or class of people, are designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group or advocate ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals.” Along with completely discontinuing all ethnic studies classes the bill also included a ban on several books including Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of The Oppressed. While in the wording of the bill it seems like this is an attempt to eliminate racism it is in fact yet another way for the oppressive government of Arizona to maintain their position of power by inundating the public with ignorance about their situation. As Friere writes “The oppressor knows full well that this intervention would be to his best interest. What is to his interest is for the people to continue in a state of submersion, impotent in the face of reality.” The news of this ban was not taken very well by the Occupy Movement who, knowing the importance of Freires work to shedding ignorance and inacting social change have begun a campaign to send copies of the book to the students.
