I thought that this week’s Lievrouw article was helpful in offering a working definition of New Media and activist tactics. I’m interested in reading more and seeing what Lievrouw has to say about the capabilities of New Media for specifically democracy-based political issues. I think that the way she described the traditional, top-down mass media system really made me realize how much it was a product of the capitalist system. If New Media is, by definition and construction, a more collaborative form of media, will it lead to more collaborative forms of decision-making and meaning-making? Or, in other words, how will it enable us to visualize a post-capitalist, world? (Or is that way too idealistic??)… Eager to hear others’ thoughts…
