As of late, it seems as though there has been a massive inundation of instances of police violence being covered by mass media outlets, Michael Brown, Levar Jones, John Crawford III, and Chris Lollie, among others. Has there in fact been an increase in police violence, or are devices such as smart phones, dash cams, and security cameras just serving to bring more of these incidents to light? Conversely, will the social media era have a positive long-term effect in serving to curb societal violence? Will a more vigilant society lead to more convictions of police offenders rendering them no longer “above the law”?
