I recently saw a particularly troubling video of police prejudice, brutality, ignorance, and outright incompetence in action. The video is emblematic of the deplorable police behavior that the recent protests in Ferguson, Missouri attempted to call attention to. The clip features dash cam footage of a former South Caroline police officer, Sean Groubert, stopping an African American driver, Levar Jones, at a gas station as he is exiting his vehicle, demanding to see his license, and then opening fire four times, hitting the Jones once in the hip, as he turned to retrieve his license from inside the car. To add insult to injury, Jones was handcuffed to his hospital bed until 12am that evening, as police officials forgot to release him. It is this kind of asinine, destructive behavior that is hindering progress. Where are we at in society when our police force is shooting the individuals that they are paid to keep safe? Additionally, how can people argue against the usage of dashboard cameras after seeing a video like this? Officer Groubert has since been fired and charged with assault and battery and faces up to 20 years in prison, but who knows how things might have gone had the incident not been recorded on tape.
