Much has been said and written about the near-utopian community that Tony Hsieh, founder of Zappos, has created in Downtown Las Vegas Nevada. I was made aware of a fantastic editorial piece this past week that enlightened me to the possibility that perhaps his “everyone is equal” community is far from the happy and altruistic environment he paints it to be. When a crowdfunded product production lab was suddenly shut down, there was a wave of suicides in the community as Hsieh’s ‘laser beam of focus’ moved away from their work, and top executives and engineers who had transferred in to work on the project were left helpless in the aftermath. It’s important to be careful that we portray expectations in a realistic light, lest tragedies like this happen in the future.
