There was a really interesting article put out on the NYT this morning talking about how the Pentagon has released a report that emphasizes climate change as a national security threat. In one sense, I am interested in the approach to national security that sees it as multifaceted and intersectional.

‘“Climate change and water shortages may have triggered the drought that caused farmers to relocate to Syrian cities and triggered situations where youth were more susceptible to joining extremist groups,” Dr. [Marcus] King said. The Islamic State has seized scarce water resources to enhance its power and influence.’

However, I am also interested in the cultural work it does to make climate change only important through its impact on national security. National/Homeland security and management of terrorist activities is still under the jurisdiction OF OUR GOVERNMENT– And I could easily imagine a furthered military state justified through global warming (rising sea levels, extreme weather, etc).
