I wanted to bring up this current event, which some of you may have already heard about, because of its connection to Joan Does Dynasty and our readings for today on activist video production…

Anita Sarkeesian is a media critic and the creator of Feminist Frequency – a set of web series taking apart pop culture. The production quality is very different from the video we looked at Monday evening, but the framework of feminist criticality is largely the same as is the DIY (or DIO) quality of it. For an example of a past video from Sarkeesian see the first installment of her “Tropes vs Women in Video Games” project where she looks at the role and history of the damsel in distress in pop media. Most recently, Sarkeesian was set to speak at Utah State University (tonight, actually), but had to cancel because of a death threat promising a serious massacre. *T/W* but the full letter can be found on this blog post at Feministing.

As we’ve seen from our readings…DIY video, guerilla TV and other critical forms of peoples’ media are not new. However, I feel that this event speaks to the continued work and impact of DIO media and the struggles of challenging dominant narratives within media (and the effect on our communities IRL). We’ve got a lot of work to do….
