In our discussions on mainstream vs. independent media, I wanted to talk about a recent big story within the environmental movement that we mentioned in class today.

Today Obama and the President of China, Xi Jinping, both pledged to reduce or limit CO2 emissions. Specifically, China pledged to cap its carbon emissions by 2030 and US is setting a target to cut emissions by 26% to 28% of 2005 levels by  2025.

Who is saying what?

The NYT piece breaks the news in general terms, and then draws on studies and academics’ voices to comment on whether their pledge is enough. USA Today’s article notes in-house Republican skepticism. Further left-of-center sources like Mother Jones and Al Jazeera have weighed in, but don’t change the conversation all that much.

Has anyone found any independent media responses to this event? I am interested to see more in depth analysis of the political implications.
