I thought this might be of interest to the group working on women in advertising.

Also, how is this even legal to post publicly online? I’d be willing to speculate that this kind of nudity would never fly as casually if a man were in Kim Kardashian’s place…

One more thing: so many of the comments I’m reading about this say that it is a body positive shoot and that she’s embracing her sexuality. How do we know when body positivity turns into objectification (self or otherwise)?

The eternal conundrum. There is also another layer to this story. Her photo shoot is based on “Sarah” Saartjie Baartman, another story of colonial fuckedupness. I’ve embedded a couple of links. http://thegrio.com/2014/11/12/kim-kardashian-butt/ and http://usslave.blogspot.com/2012/04/sara-baartman-hottentot-venus.html

Thanks for posting the links. I’ve read about Saartjie Baartman ‘The Hottentot Venus’ in some of my Anthro classes so it is very interesting to look at that in the context of Kim’s photoshoot.

  3. I think it’s essential to take anything relating to Kim Kardashian with a grain of salt. Just look at how she got famous in the first place – for being friends with Paris Hilton and having a porn video leaked. She is embracing her sexuality, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is a positive image for the general public – in fact with the use of photoshop and the ways that this has circulated around the web, this is certainly not positive and rather objectification of the ‘perfect’ Kardashian form. Also, with the use of photoshop this has an unrealistic image of what Kim Kardashian actually looks like, so deforming the reality of her body furthers the lack of credibility for her to be a role model for anyone
