I just wanted to bring this to everyone’s attention as I think it shows the intense discrimination against individuals with disabilities in educational settings. The fact that the president of such a large body would think it’s acceptable in a formal planned speech to refer to some children as “the chronically tarded and the medically annoying” is disgusting and just shows how sad the current status quo is. I do not share this to try to take away from any of the other social issues that are pressing at the moment, but just to raise awareness about another thing going on right now.

I’ve cut the video to the moment in question, if anyone is interested.

It is such a crafted statement! How scary!

What is also terrifying about this is how education SHOULD be for everyone. Everyone should have the right to a quality education regardless of their mental status, race, religion, etc. Education is a basic human right yet their are people who feel so privileged that they feel as though that is not the case.

what’s interesting and dumbfounding is a lot of what she is saying seems to be super on point, especially the fact that she responded to that guy in the way she did. Its scary that someone in her position, who has the potential to do a lot of good, has these problematic views and so blatantly shared them.

A lot of her delivery seems to be aimed at comedic, that is, focusing less on the content she is speaking about and instead aiming to give a memorable and likable performance for the audience that she is engaging. I was really disappointed in this strategy; for one thing, comedy is often used as a platform to discuss a lot of tough issues without inciting too much awkwardness or outrage, because it’s a softer style of delivery. However, in this instance, the humor is used to trivialize the issues she is talking about–all of which are very serious and deserving of attention–and by making the comedic delivery of her speech the important part, she is totally undermining her position within the organization and only making herself look bad.
