This week, my group did a project on protest music in the civil rights and black lives matter movement. My topic was the legacy and power of sprituality in protest music. One significant figure in this movement is Lauryn Hill, an artist who has incorporated her strong faith into subversive racial lyrics ever since she started making music. After the happenings in Ferguson, she released a song called “Black Rage” to stand in solidarity with the movement. Someone edited together footage from the slavery, civil rights, and BLM era to the song and I thought it was a great demonstration of Detournment.
