Reading the interview with Marlon Riggs and seeing some of his work reminded me what a powerful force poetry could be. It is a way for people of all ages to express themselves. In the interview he comments on how most black gay poet’s work deals with them being black or alone. This reminded me of a couple of poems that I have read about being black. Perhaps the most memorable is this poem by a young African child in 2006 and it was nominated for an award.
What is also great is that spoken word poetry and poetry slams have really become quite popular due to social media. The accessibility of YouTube has allowed new artists to get their work out. In one of my other media classes there has been quite a bit of discussion about different artists so I thought I would also post a list I found of the best black female spoken word artists- some of them are really good (I especially recommend Tonya Ingram)
