While I agree with the spirit of Buy Nothing Day, taking power away from corporations and giving the power back to the people, I can’t help but feel it is a bit misguided. The solution to stopping business powers is not to make businesses lose money, that’s also not good for the economy. I think the most important attack on businesses and corporations is to close up loopholes, make smart regulations, more equal taxation, and to keep jobs in the US. Whether this be through penalties for leaving or rewards for staying, if we close up loopholes we can curb the issue of companies taking advantage of a reward system. Buy Nothing Day does nothing to promote actual solutions but instead seems more like lashing out for the sake of lashing out. The other side of this is that there are plenty of families that can really benefit from Black Friday deals. Telling those people to boycott Black Friday is not just misguided, but also dangerous.
