The overarching feeling I got from The Medium is the Massage is one of anxiety. McLuhan used the pages of his text as a series of mirrors (sometimes literally, as some of the pages could be read properly when reflected in a mirror), reflections of oneself and the society of anxiety both created and perpetuated by media industrial complexes. The conglomeration of seemingly disparate images in different orientations, from different eras, smashed together on the same rectangular field in black-and-white well-represents the saturated, smattery plane that is our world of media. See page 60 for a good representation, in which there is a 60s comic-book-looking “BANG!” text about envelopement, standing next to two cut-outs of statues of ancient philosophers. Only their heads are present, looking out of place, and painfully one dimensional next to a Socrates quote.

New media is so dominant in our lives that it is indeed anxiety inducing. You’re right that The Medium is the Massage successfully conveyed the sense of chaos and constant fear that the media creates in our lives. Though a wonderful tool for communication, new media certainly keeps us in a state of constant panic because of all of the bad news that is aimed at us on a daily basis. I often wonder where I can go to find news that exclusively inspires me and brings me hope to combat all the rest…
Interesting that a physical text can mimic the social anxieties we experience online everyday. When I was reading it, I definitely had a hard time staying focused on the content being conveyed, likely because of the plethora of images and sporadic quotes throughout.
I like your interpretation on the book and how it brings a sense of anxiety to the current world we live in. The media can be overwhelming with repetition of the same messages urging consumers to follow mainstream opinions and buy certain items. The book brought this to light and was a nice step back to bring these issues forward, even though it contributed in its own way.
